It may also be a good first machine if you’re already a bit familiar with the process of making espresso. This machine can be easily spotted in few small to medium sized cafes for making an excellent shot. Many experienced home baristas have been using it for a long time and are all satisfied with the performance.

With the Breville Duo-Temp, you can also start to work on your skills by using non-pressurized baskets. They require a bit better technique, but most people agree that they make a better end product.

Check Price

Maybe the biggest difference between this model and the high-end machines is the lack of programmability. And with the Duo-Temp, you even have to manually stop the brewing process. If you care more about the underlying quality of the machine than about program ability, this model offers excellent value for money.

#2 Rancilio Silvia Espresso Maker

Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine

This is not a machine for beginners, but if you’re experienced at pulling shots, you will love the results with this machine. Priced in the mid-range the Rancilio Silvia also features a beautiful stainless steel design. It can be found in many homes and small cafes as it does makes a wonderful shot, always.

Features and Specifications

  • 67-ounce water tank
  • Chrome-plated commercial-grade steam wand
  • 15 bar pump
  • Commercial grade group head
  • Chrome plated brass portafilter
  • 12-ounce brass boiler
  • Three thermostats separately monitor steam, boiler, and espresso temperature
  • 3-way solenoid valve for easy clean-up

The Silvia is intended for residential use, but it includes many of the same features as Rancilio’s commercial models and that is why many small cafes have been using it for making descent shots. The group head, portafilter, and boiler are all made up of solid brass, and the powerful steam wand is also commercial-grade. The portafilter handle has the same ergonomic design found in the commercial models too.

What really separates this model from the commercial espresso machines is its single boiler design. Because it can’t heat milk and brew coffee back to back, you can’t produce a lot of drinks in a short amount of time like in commercial ones.

Check Price

The Silvia is a bit unforgiving when it comes to consistency of grind and tamps. But if you’ve got the skills to deal with it, this machine will give commercial quality coffee at a more affordable price.

#6 Breville BES920XL Dual Boiler Semi Automatic

Breville BES920XL Dual Boiler

Another great option is the Breville BES920XL for those who are really serious about their espresso. Due to a high price, this option is mostly neglected but this is the best pick if you’re willing to pay more for added functionality. So we have kept this machine in middle position due to the pricing part. In addition, the dual boiler design allows making more drinks in a shorter amount of time.

Features and Specifications

  • Stainless steel double boiler
  • 84-ounce water tank
  • Programmable shot volume and temperature
  • Pressurized and non-pressurized filter baskets
  • Cup warmer
  • Separate hot water dispenser
  • Automatic on and shut-off
  • Pre-infusion
  • Over-pressure valve limits extraction pressure
  • PID temperature control

It’s right there in the name – dual boilers mean that it can steam milk and pull shots at the same time. And this may not sound that important if you’re just making yourself a morning latte, but if there are guests over and everyone wants a cappuccino, it saves a lot of time.

Moreover, both of the Breville models reviewed here come with tampers that attach magnetically to the body of the machine. Almost many espresso makers come with useless little plastic tampers, but Breville actually gives a decent solid metal tamper.

Check Price

The Breville Dual Boiler allows programming the length and temperature of the shot, as well as automatic on and off times for the machine. Therefore, this one is a great coffee maker for home if you’ve got a bigger budget and want a fast, high-quality machine with plenty of bells and whistles. Also, Breville is a company that puts a lot of care into the details.

Types of Espresso Coffee Makers

Italians have been enjoying espresso, or pressure-brewed coffee, since the late 19th century. The first espresso machine was huge steam-driven contraptions that often overheated the water in order to maintain pressure and those were considered as the best of that time. It was a natural development to start using the steam to heat and froth milk to go with the coffee. The time flew and here we are with smaller coffee machines capable of brewing the best cups in much lesser time.

An espresso maker can be divided into 2 major categories

  1. Steam Driven – This type actually produces very strong coffee instead of an espresso and that’s why it’s quietly affordable. Can come as low as $40 and goes up to $100
  2. Pump Driven – This type can be called as a real espresso maker and is again sub-divided into 2 major categories
    1. Semi-Automatic – This type provides some manual functionality to have control over the brewing process like temperature, timings, and strength. A semi-automatic comes in a price range of $150-$1000 depending on quality and needs.
    2. Super Automatic – Allows to preparing café style drinks at home in a seamless way. It is pre-programmed to prepare these drinks automatically with a touch of a button. Can cost as low as $500 and as high as $5000 depending on the requirements.

Buying Guide – Few Questions to Think About

Espresso machines have come a long way in the past seven decades, but the basic process remains the same. An espresso maker consists a brew head, a portafilter to hold the ground coffee, a boiler, and a steam wand to heat milk. If you’re thinking of buying a coffee machine from the market, there’s no shortage of models to choose from and everyone claims to be the best. You can find some models that even cost less than a hundred dollars while many can cost several thousand dollars. How do you begin to sort through options?

To help narrow down the choice among the Espresso Machines, ask yourself a few questions:

How much are you able or willing to spend?
How much space do you have?
Do you have any experience pulling espresso shots?
How often do you drink espresso and espresso-based drinks?

Once you have a better handle on the priorities, it’s time to take a look at a few models, that are considered to be the best picks.

Finally, which among the above is the best espresso machine for you? Obviously, this is going to be a personal choice that depends on your own taste, budget and priorities. We’ve listed above the top rated home espresso machines from which you can pick your favorite.

The choice of pressurized or non-pressurized baskets is great if you’re just starting out but want to improve barista skills over time.

Additionally, the Rancilio Silvia is great for experienced baristas who want the quality and feel of a commercial model at home. Also, the solid brass construction of the group head and other key parts means that you will enjoy this machine for years to come.

  1. No reviews on saeco or Jura machines? These machines are stalwarts in home machines.
And if you are an espresso lover then you just have to try
Salimbene espresso coffee available in the USA on
It won best Italian roast for 2015 in a blind tasting of all popular European brands by Crema magazine and best espresso by espresso coffee snobs. Com

      • Thanks for the info and for pointing out the super machines.
I’d just like to say I’m looking at buying a new super machine, my old one, a Saeco Vienna finally died.
It was 15 years old. I maintained it well cleaning and de calcifying it every 3 months.
The computer inside registered over 30,000 cups of espresso were pulled on it. The repair man said,” This machine owes you nothing, its done its job! So I am looking for another Saeco or Jura. Quality lasts.
However over the years I have always looked for that perfect cup and I think I found it in Salimbene, a local roaster in Naples, now available in the USA on It won a lot of awards in Europe, try it and let me know what you think. Its a blend of coffee beans from all over the world, and isn’t bitter at all.

      • Sure George, will be trying your said words. However, if you are looking for a Super espresso then do try Jura as I mentioned in my previous comment. These are the high end machines that can go long without complaining. Moreover, a machine that I missed in that article was Jura Ena 9which is again a great piece of creation. It would be grateful if you buy from our link as that supports our site.

  2. Has Mr Coffee Cafe Barista ECMP1000 grinding system? My son is only 9 years old. He loves delicious espresso. Which espresso machine better for him and also user-friendly for him?
