Making Starbucks-Style Caramel Macchiato At Home
Caramel Macchiato is one of the most popular drinks at Starbucks, but did you know that you can easily make and enjoy one at home? Imagine starting your Sunday morning with your favourite freshly-brewed caramel macchiato – and you don’t even have to go through the Starbucks drive-thru in your pyjamas!
The main ingredients of this popular drink are coffee, vanilla syrup, milk and caramel sauce.
Starbucks uses a very dark roast for their signature drinks. Although some people complain that it tastes “burnt,” the Starbucks roast tastes exactly right in a sweet, flavored milk-based drink.
If you don’t want to use Starbucks own coffee, look for any very dark roast like Coffee Kult. Have it ground according to your brewing method.
Hope you are having one of the best home espresso machine for your recipes to taste better. The easiest way to brew coffee for this purpose is to buy an Italian moka, or stove-top coffee maker. An Aeropress is another easy and inexpensive way to brew espresso-strength coffee at home.
Alternatively, you can just brew the way you always do, but double or triple the amount of coffee you use for a stronger brew.
- Bring 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar to a boil. Let it simmer for about three minutes and remove from heat.
- Add 1 tablespoon vanilla extract and allow it to cool.
This syrup will keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for about 2 weeks.
Starbucks uses whole milk for the richest taste. If you prefer, you can substitute a lower-fat milk or a non-dairy milk such as almond or soy.
If you don’t have a milk frother, simply heat milk in a saucepan or microwave. You can froth it in a blender or with a hand blender. You can even use a whisk by rubbing it together rapidly between your hands (like you’re trying to start a campfire with a stick).
Don’t skimp on this ingredient. Use a good quality caramel sauce such as Torani or Trader Joe’s Fleur de Sel.
Starbucks-style Caramel Macchiato
Ingredients for 1 serving
- 1 Tablespoon vanilla syrup
- 2/3 cup milk
- 1 double shot of espresso, or ¼ cup very strong coffee
- 3 teaspoons caramel sauce for drizzling (or to taste)
- Pour vanilla syrup into a pre-warmed serving cup.
- Heat and froth milk, and pour it into the cup.
- Carefully pour the espresso or strong coffee into the cup without destroying the foam.
- Drizzle caramel sauce over the foam and serve.
For an Iced Caramel Macchiato, half-fill a glass with ice cubes. Allow the coffee to cool a bit before you mix the drink. Pour the coffee, vanilla syrup and milk over the ice and stir. Top with whipped cream (optional) and drizzle caramel sauce over the top and serve.
For a Frappuccino, blend the ice, cold milk, vanilla syrup and espresso in a blender with an “ice crush” setting. Serve in a tall glass, with or without whipped cream topping, and drizzle the top with caramel sauce.
