For the purpose of brewing, both brands recommend to use distilled water used to achieve the best intriguing taste. A pressure based system is used in Keurig machines, whereas Nespresso uses an exclusive extraction system for brewing. Keurig normally brews at a higher temperature than Nespresso at 192 °F (89 °C), a default setting in most machines of Keurig.

  • K-Cups:  It consists of an aluminum lid and a plastic cup. It is sealed perfectly so that optimum freshness is ensured. There is a filter inside the pod that prevents coffee grounds from mixing with the beverage.
  • Nespresso Pods: The pod is mainly made of aluminum and it also seals the coffee grounds to ensure supreme freshness. Each capsule contains about 5-6 grams of coffee inside it. The interior of the capsule is lined with food-grade lacquer.

Environmental Impact of K-Cups and Pods

Almost all the K-cups and Nespresso Pods are not recyclable and they end up in the landfills. There is one slight difference, K-Cups are mostly made of plastic and Nespresso pods are mainly made of aluminum.  This is where Nespresso is criticized more since there are concerns about health effects by aluminum.
